Tagi was the darling of the residents of Shiv Apartment in Krishnanagar in Naroda. So it was no surprise that his 'murder' on Tuesday night left residents of the apartment stunned. But what pained them even more was that the police took more than 24 hours to reach the crime spot despite being informed about the incident immediately.

The 'killer' is still at large. But before you start commenting on the rising crime rate in the city and blame the police for this, it would be worth mentioning that the deceased, Tagi, was a canine.

The overworked police can after all be forgiven for not bothering to investigate the murder of a dog, when several other unsolved crimes stay piled up.

But, for the residents of Shiv Apartments, the death of Tagi is a cruel blow. For, the dog was born and brought up near the apartment. He had since been taken care of by the residents of the apartment.

On the day of the incident, Tagi had the gall to bark at one Pradeepsinh Vaghela when he accidentally stepped on the dog while playing garba. Incensed by the dog's daring, the 23-year-old rushed to his flat in the same apartment and returned with a knife. He then repeatedly stabbed the dog until it was dead. The shocked residents soon informed the police, which apparently did not think that the murder of a dog was that important to warrant a quick response, and reached the spot after some 24 hours.

It took the intervention by a social worker Harshad Patel and those into animal welfare to bring the police to the crime spot.  Police have registered a case of cruelty towards animals and are investigating the matter. Tagi's body, meanwhile, has been sent for a post mortem.

The accused, Vaghela, who obviously did not expect anybody to stand for the right of a canine, has been absconding.
