A man who tried to intervene in a clash involving the agent of an alleged prostitute and her friends and family was stabbed to death late on Sunday night. The victim was killed when trying to save his brother and one Sandip, alias Ilyas, who were being beaten up severely by a group of people, at around 11.15 pm on Sunday.

Sandip allegedly worked as an agent for Pooja, alias Aarti, an employee of a beauty parlour and alleged prostitute. At around 9 pm on Sunday, Sandip snatched Pooja’s mobile phone and was trying to escape when one Deepak stopped him and tried to resolve the issue. Sandip said that Pooja owed him Rs800, said PJ Trivedi, senior inspector of the Maninagar police station, who is investigating the matter.

Around an hour after this incident, Pooja called Deepak and Sandip to gate no.1 of the Kankaria Lake, where they were beaten up by her friends, Trivedi said.

The victim, Ramesh Balwala, was Deepak’s brother and had been sitting near a tea stall. He was stabbed while trying to save Sandip and Deepak from their assailants, Trivedi said.

“Deepak first intervened in the clash between Pooja and Sandip. But she thought that Ramesh and Deepak were friends of the latter. Ramesh was then killed by her husband and brother-in-law,” Trivedi said.

Deepak and Sandip were beaten up but managed to escape. When they returned to the scene of the clash, they found Ramesh lying there, stabbed in the back.

Three people were arrested in connection with the case at around 6 pm on Monday. The police said that Ramesh was killed just because he was sitting at the tea stall with his brother, who had actually tried to resolve the issue.
