There was neither a camera in the vicinity, nor a dummy around to perform the 'stunt' for him. And yet, the possibility of losing his life did little to deter 25-year old Baldev Patel, who jumped from a bridge to evade arrest on Monday.

Patel did an Amitabh Bachchan on Monday evening, when the police were closing in on him to arrest him. According to police sources, police officials were running after Patel to catch hold of him, and to avoid being caught, he jumped from the Ambedkar bridge into the river.

"This is a shocking incident and one of its kind, where a suspect went to  the extent of risking his life to evade arrest," said a police source. Patel, who knows to swim, reportedly managed to swim his way out of the river.

The team of Danilimda police who were chasing Patel, were stunned to see the latter jump. They immediately summoned the fire brigade to rescue Patel. However, the fire brigade team was unable to find him till late in the evening. "Primarily, it seems that he managed to escape from the river and has been saved," in charge assistant commissioner of police for 'K' division, BD Vaishnav, told DNA.

Patel was being chased by the police for his alleged involvement in the assault of a traffic cop and a Lok Rakshak Dal (LRD) police constable. "A traffic cop Yasin Pathan has been admitted to the LG Hospital after Patel, along with two others, assaulted him on Sunday evening," a cop said.
