Two people were arrested by the police on Friday for allegedly forging documents to sell a kidney to a patient at the kidney institute in Civil Hospital. One of the accused wanted to sell his organ for Rs1.40 lakh to tide over his financial crisis, but broke down during counselling and revealed the entire scandal.

Shahibaug police arrested Mahesh Sharma, alias Gyanchand, who wanted to sell his kidney, and Sher Ali Pathan who helped Sharma find a buyer for it. Sharma is a native of Rajasthan and was living in Patelvas area in Sabarmati, while Pathan is a resident of Chandola Lake, Shah Alam. The duo was arrested after Viren Trivedi, residential medical officer (RMO) of the hospital, lodged a complaint at Shahibaug  police station.

The scandal came to light on Friday when Sharma spilled the beans during counselling before the transplant. Before that, Sharma had claimed that he was a distant relative of Dharma Jain, a patient at the Institute of Kidney Diseases and Research Centre, Civil Hospital who needed a transplant of kidney. He had even produced relevant documents. However, during the counselling, which is a routine procedure before the transplant, Sharma told his sad story to the RMO and other doctors, Trivedi stated in his complaint.

Sharma told the medical officers that he was going through a financial crisis and had decided to sell either of his kidneys after a friend told him that it would fetch him big money. Through a friend, he came in contact with Pathan, who, in turn, put him in touch with one Manoj Jain, the complaint further states. Manoj told Sharma that the hospitalized Dharma needed a kidney and they finalized a deal to donate one for Rs1.40 lakh. To meet the norms, Manoj, Pathan and Sharma forged a voter's identity card and other documents for Sharma to prove that he was a relative of Dharma.

Soon after Sharma confessed to forging documents, Trivedi informed the Shahibaug police. Shahibaug police inspector VA Rahewar said they have arrested Sharma and Pathan and are on the look-out for Manoj. Police have registered a case of forging documents and cheating and have initiated investigation into the matter, the PI added.
