Man detained for abduction and murder of a teenager in Surat

A man has been detained for questioning in connection with alleged kidnapping and murder of a teenager in Sachin area of Surat on Sunday, police said.

Body of Mayur Ramani (13), studying in class VIII of LD High School who had gone missing since March 9 was found from a field near Talangpur village late last night, they said.

After the boy disappeared, his mother who was in Mumbai for some work, received a call on her mobile phone from her son's cellphone, with a person speaking in Hindi demanding Rs1 lakh as ransom, police said.

The boy's mother thought that it was a prank and did not file a complaint or inform her relatives, they said.

But when she returned on March 10 from Mumbai, and after not finding Mayur, she and her relatives filed a missing person's complaint with the police.

Following the complaint, a search operation was conducted and Mayur's body was found from a field on the Sachin-Navsari road, police said, adding that body has been sent for postmortem to ascertain the cause of death.

Meanwhile, one man has been detained for questioning in this regard, police said, adding that further  investigation in the matter was on.
