West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today reviewed the work of all departments of her government and directed her ministerial colleagues to ensure that projects taken by their respective departments reached the targetted beneficiaries.

"The Chief Minister made an A to Z review of the work all the departments. She advised the ministers to ensure that the budget allocated to their departments showed tangible results. She said, since the funds were public money, the projects should reach the people,'' Finance Minister Amit Mitra told newsmen after the meeting.

Stating that the meeting was attended by the entire Council of Minsters and principal secretaries of all the departments, he claimed ''This was a historic review meeting. Such review was never done in 35 years of Left Front rule."

At the meeting, the Chief Minister emphasised asset creation, especially in social infrastructure like schools, besides stressing the need for spending on social welfare schemes, Mitra said.

"The chief minister pointed out that there are many schemes where the Centre provides upto 90 per cent of funds. She asked the ministers to start projects under such schemes with 10 per cent of state funds so that the Central funds also keep flowing in," he said.

In this connection, the Chief Minister laid particular emphasis on the Backward Area Development projects funded by the Centre, the Finance Minister said.

Mitra said Banerjee also asked the ministers to provide completion certificates of their projects on time to facilitate inflow of the next tranche of funds.

Asked whether funds for the projects were available till March next, Mitra said, ''since funds have been allocated (for the projects) in the budget, I hope the funds will be available."

Mitra, however, did not give a direct reply when asked whether the Chief Minister was happy with the review.

"Today's meeting was held collectively with all the ministers and it was not a one-to-one meeting. The emphasis was on teamwork and doing projects through discussions and discourse and achieving results," he said.

Banerjee has informed the ministers that similar meetings will be held every few months, Mitra added.
