The making of floral rangoli (pookalam) and delicious dishes will be a common sight on Friday in many households of the city as the Malayali community enthusiastically celebrates Onam.

The harvest festival, Onam, marks the last day of a 10-day festival period and is celebrated in a grand manner.

Since it is a custom to have food with your family members at your home on this day, there will be no grand celebration by the Ahmedabad Kerala Samajam (AKS). But the city on Sunday will witness a grand event and celebration - 'Onam 2011' at BD Rao Hall, Memnagar where various activities and competitions have been planned. Speaking about the event, co-ordinator Dinesh Nair said, "From the morning, the event will have floral rangoli competitions, stage performances, academic award distributions and lavish lunch."

Organised by the Nair Welfare and Cultural Association (NWCA), the main attraction of the day will be the Miss Kerala prelim round.

"Till now, many states participated in the Miss Kerala prelim rounds and the finals were held in Kerala. This is the first time that prelim rounds of Miss Kerala are being held in Gujarat to add vibrancy to the entire programme," added Nair.

A variety of delicacies including aviyal (a mixed vegetable), olan (pumpkin and coconut milk), pachadi (fruits and vegetables ground together with coconut), paysam (kheer) and kaalan (fruits and vegetables in yoghurt) will be prepared on this day.

The general secretary of AKS C Gireesan said about Onam celebrations of AKS, "On September 18 we will have Onam celebrations at various wards like Vastrapur, Nirnaynagar, Maninagar, Bapunagar, Krishnanagar and Naroda  Also, on September 25, there will be a celebration by remaining wards of Vejalpur and Bopal.”
