Malaria, cholera on the rise in Gujarat

Data of the last three years for water borne diseases and malaria during July month reveal the significant rising trend number of malaria and cholera.

According to the data provided by the state government, while water borne diseases like typhoid, acute diarrheal ailments like gastroenteritis and acute viral hepatitis have decreased in the last three years, cholera cases have reached a new high during the same period.

Data of last three years for water borne diseases and malaria during July month reveal the significant rising trend number of malaria and cholera. The number of typhoid cases registered till July is the lowest in the last three years. In 2008, the number of case was 12850, in 2009 it was 15878 and in 2010 it dropped to 9596.

A similar trend has been seen in  acute diarrheal diseases (ADD) and acute viral hepatitis. Number of ADD case in 2008, 2009 and 2010 are 5.67 lakh, 6.46 lakh and 3.77 lakh respectively.

Till July 2010 the ADD cases have been the lowest number in the last three years. Number of registered acute viral hepatitis has also been lowest, which was 10051 in 2008, 11019 in 2009 and 7906 in 2010.

However the number of cases of cholera has gone up. There were only 50 cases registered in 2008. The number has gone up to 318 in 2009 and 450 cases have been registered in 2010 in the state so far.

The number of malaria cases in the state has increased as compared to last year. Since 2007 a significant decrease was noticed till 2009, but in 2010 the number of malaria cases registered in the state till July has gone up. There were 6778 cases registered in 2007 and 6290 cases in 2008. The number of registered cases in 2009 was as low as 3514, but in July 2010 the number has gone up to 4368.
