The office-bearers of Textile Labour Association (TLA), known as Majoor Mahajan Sangh, will face criminal charges for siphoning off Rs2 crore from the funds given by the closed mill workers.

The case comes as a shock to Gandhiji's followers as the association was set up by Mahatama Gandhi himself. A member of TLA has alleged that the office bearers of this historical association committed the huge fraud.

For the first time in 99 years the deputy labour commissioner of Ahmedabad division has given the go ahead to carry out a legal procedure (fraud) against the office-bearers of the association (TLA).

Lakhansinh Tomar, an LTA member submitted an application with the Karanj police on April 24 where he filed a complaint against the president, secretary and treasurer of TLA.

"Considering auditor's report and balance sheet, we permitted the applicant, Lakhansinh Tomar, to take a legal action against the fraudsters under the trade union act," said VM Jadeja, deputy commissioner of Ahmedabad division. He added that an incident of such a nature has happened for the first time in TLA's history.

As per the auditors report, the office bearers paid Rs1.93 crore to the representatives of TLA but failed to produce the supporting vouchers over the period of four years. In reply to the query raised by the auditor, the office-bearers said it was not possible to produce support vouchers and the money was given as per the TLA rules.

The office-bearers illegally collected 2% of the amount received by the workers of closed mills by misinterpreting the judgment of Gujarat high court, alleged Lakhansinh Tomar, the complainant. Some 65-70 % of the amount is given to the representatives of the TLA in respective mills. However, the association failed to produce vouchers supporting payment to the representatives leading to suspicion that they siphoned off the workers' money, alleged Tomar.

However, TLA president Raman Patel said it was the association's practice and there is nothing illegal in it.
