Dreaded gangster-turned-terrorist Aftab Ansari was on Tuesday brought from Kolkata to a city court in connection with an 11-year-old arm and ammunition seizure case reported in Patan district. The case was registered by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in 2001.

Ansari, who has been awarded death sentence in the American Center attack case in Kolkata of 2002, could not be brought to the city earlier due to security reasons. He has been lodged in Alipore jail in Kolkata.

He is the prime accused in the case, in which the CBI, on night of October 26, 2001, had seized a huge cache of arms and ammunition from a truck bearing Rajasthan registration number Santhalpur in Patan district.  On Tuesday, amid tight security by city crime branch personnel and Kolkata police, Ansari was produced before the special CBI court of magistrate AY Dave. When the judge asked Ansari whether he wanted to hire any lawyer as the court would start the trial against him soon, Ansari replied in the negative. The CBI magistrate then prepared the case papers and sent it to the trial court for starting trial against Ansari.

The further hearing in the case has been posted to March 6.

Two other accused in the case — Azam Chima and Akhtar Bashi Ahmed, both belonging to Pakistan based terror outfit Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) — have already stood trial and served ten-year imprisonment. The trial against Ansari is pending as he was lodged in Alipore jail in Kolkata.

According to CBI, Ansari funded the arm cache and instructed his two accomplices in Gujarat to take delivery of it and distribute the arms among the gang members. Ansari is undergoing death sentence in the American Center attack case in Kolkata of 2002 in which six policemen were killed and 14 people were injured.

He is also facing life sentence in shoe baron Parth Protim Burman’s abduction case. Ansari’s gang had abducted Burman and extorted Rs4 crore from him through hawala in Dubai.
