It’s seems to be the season to remember Mahatma Gandhi. After Gandhigiri became popular and then Anna Hazare’s anti-corruption movement brought non-violent protest back to people’s mind, another legacy of the Mahatma will hit the street soon.

Only, it will be time to show off the Gandhi legacy with khadi denim now.

Leading denim manufacturer Arvind Limited is likely to market denim made out of Gandhi’s khadi across the world. Made in Saurashtra, the khadi denim is also likely to be exported from here.

It is believed that two Saurashtra-based organisations have signed an agreement with the world’s leading denim manufacturer to supply khadi denim, sources close to the development said.

Gondal-based Udyog Bharti, known for its poly khadi, has already supplied 300 metres of khadi denim to Arvind. “We had received request from the company two months ago. We had sent samples and now we have sent them the first consignment of 300 metres,” says Chandrakant Patel, secretary, Udyog Bharti.

Rajkot-based Saurashtra Rachnatmak Samiti is likely to begin its supply in November. Devendra Desai, chairman of SRS, said: “We had developed denim variety of khadi a year ago. Under the special scheme of SFURTI (Scheme of Fund for Regeneration of Traditional Industries) launched by the Khadi & Village Industries Commission, we had set up a special centre at Limbdi for development of new varieties of khadi. Khadi denim was developed there. We plan to supply some 5,000 metres of the variety to Arvind in the first year.”

However, officials of Arvind Limited were not willing to speak on the issue. But a company official, on the condition of anonymity, said that talks are going on for khadi denim. “As of now, nothing is concrete. Talks for khadi denim are at a very early stage,” said the official.
