His 4 shows in Ahmedabad & one in UP are to be last of a 61-year-long career in which he has given 22,400 performances.
Call it mass hypnosis or sleight of hand, magician Kantilal Girdharilal Vora, more famously known as K Lal, has been successful in casting a spell on his audiences for the last 61 years. The 88-year-old wizard is now getting ready to wind up his act. His four shows in Ahmedabad beginning Friday are the last that would be staged in the Ahmedabad. After that, the master illusionist will cast a spell on his audiences for the final time at a performance in Uttar Pradesh.
Lal confirmed that he will retire after the show in Uttar Pradesh. “I am 88-years-old now”, he said.
“I have given 22,400 shows all over the world and I have performed in all of them. This is a world record. There is a company in London which has staged the same play, Mousetrap, for nearly 60 years but the actors have changed. As a one-man show, I am the only one to last this long,” he said.
After his four shows in Ahmedabad, K Lal would perform his last act in Uttar Pradesh and that will be the end of a magical career. In Ahmedabad, the first of the four shows was held on June 29 at HK Hall. It will again be held on June 30 at 9:30pm, and then on June 30 at 9.30pm at the same venue. On July 1 there will be two more shows at the same venue at 4 pm and 7 pm. In his 6-decade-long career, the master magician has never once cancelled a show.
He was born in January 1924 in Bagasra near Rajkot and his son, 62-year-old Hasubhai (known as Junior K Lal) is active and getting ready to assume his father’s mantle. Talking about K Lal, the great Raj Kapoor had once said: “If you examine his blood, you will find nothing but magic in it.” And so it is with K Lal. With the help of the magicians, jugglers and more who visited his father’s house in Rajkot, he took to magic when he was just 7 years old, His father’s guests turned out to be his tutors.
