Maestros relax as Ahmedabad students take over Saptak stage

Twenty-four students commenced the evening at the seventh day of Saptak and enthralled the audience with jap taal. The students, in the 9-25 age group, played for 15 minutes and presented their audience with uthan, chalan chari, tukda and paran.

The audience at the new venue, Amrut Mody School of Management, was thrilled with the notations the tabla presented in the cool Ahmedabad air. These students were Saptak Institute’s pupils.

Having started his musical journey at a tender age, sarod vadan and vocalist, Pt Tejendra Narayan Majumdar, presented to the waiting audience on Saturday night raag kaunsikanada in two parts.

Although he was a disciple of Ustad Bahadur Khan, due to the latter’s untimely death, Pt Majumdar studied under Ajay Sinha Roy and was later accepted as a disciple of the great Indian instrumentalist, Ustad Ali Akbar Khan.

Pt Majumdar’s repertoire combines elements from dhrupad, tantrakari and gayaki styles. The raag kaunsikanada which he presented is a mix of raag malkauns and raag darbari kanada’s notes. He was accompanied by Pt Puran Maharaj on tabla.
