Bunking won't be easy for traffic personnel now. For, in order to ensure punctuality among its officials, the traffic department has installed hi-tech punching machines to keep a tab on their check-in and check-out time.

About 35 such machines have been installed at various traffic chowkis in the city. “This initiative has been undertaken to maintain punctuality among our staff. Each and every staff posted at different traffic junctions in the city will need to maintain their in and out time which will be recorded by the machines,” said MM Anarwala, DCP, traffic.

The Ahmedabad traffic department has around 950 staff and an extra 300 volunteers. The machine will record timings of all the staff right from constable to police sub inspectors.  The city has 72 traffic points, and initially the machine will be installed at few major ones.

However, the traffic cops who are on bandobast can mark his or her presence on any of the biometric system near to the bandobast point.

Anarwala said fingerprints of traffic officials will be taken for the purpose so that they can record there check-in and check-out time. An assistant sub inspector has to manage two to three traffic points and a staff of about 15 traffic officials. “It is difficult to keep a record of the timings of all of them. The machines will help in reducing the work load of the team head,” Anarwala said.

Anarwala said the staff will also benefit from the new system. “Many times a particular official must have gone on a break when higher authorities come for a surprise visit. When they don't find an official at his place they mark him as absent. With the new system this can be avoided,” he said.

The traffic points where these machines will be installed are Helmet cross roads, Panchvati, Vejalpur, Paldi, CG Road, Income Tax, Subhash Bridge and Delhi Darwaja among others.

The new system is a joint initiative of Atul Karwal, joint commissioner of police, and Anarwala.
