While on one hand, concern is being expressed over slow evacuation of Indians from strife-torn Libya, low-cost carriers (LCCs) are yet to chip in despite civil aviation ministry’s rap to the LCCs to fall in line or face action.

On March 1, the ministry of external affairs (MEA) had instructed all airlines to deploy aircraft for emergency evacuation. However, only Kingfisher and Jet responded to the call and immediately sent special sorties.

LCCs refused to budge citing low capacity following which the ministry of civil aviation on March 3 called all airlines for a slot committee meeting at Delhi.

“The ministry warned that the air operators permit of the airline which refuses to fly special evacuation flights as directed by the government will be cancelled,” an airline official present at the meeting said.

National carrier Air India (AI) is already engaged in the evacuation from February 26. However, two days after the ministry’s rap, only Indigo airlines, deployed an aircraft. Other two LCCs — Goair and Spicejet are still silent over the issue.

IndiGo airlines is going to operate special flights to Alexandria, Egypt to evacuate Indians stuck in the region.

“In a move to assist the evacuation process for Indian nationals, 6E (Indigo) will operate special Airbus-320 aircraft on the Delhi- Alexandria route.  The flight is expected to take off on March 6,” the spokesperson said.

“We are now waiting for final instructions of the Ministry of Civil Aviation,” the spokesperson added.
