This year, Diwali specific sweets including ghughra, magas, mohan-thal and the like seem to be giving way to low-sugar and low-cholesterol based sweets. All thanks to the increasing number of diet-conscious Amdavadis.

Many housewives are breaking away from this ritual of preparing traditional sweets dishes at home during Diwali festivities. For instance, Ketki Dhenon, a housewife is preparing coconut and date based sweet dishes at home this Diwali.

She says, "My family has a history of diabetes and cholesterol and that is why I am doing every bit to prevent my kids from getting these problems and ensuring that the risk of their occurrence reduces in my family. So its khajur (date) pak and coconut balls that I am going to prepare this Diwali."

The pak consists of only dates and dry fruits with no additional sugar added. Similar is the case with coconut balls which will be prepared with dry coconut and milkmaid. Addition of extra sugar in any of her dishes is a strict 'No'.

"On New Year few of my close friends and relatives are going to drop by and since most of us have kids, I am preparing a low-fat chocolate pudding for all. Children love to devour chocolates but as a mother I have to ensure that they don't put on extra calories and become obese. Thus this pudding has no sugar. It is made of low fat milk, vanilla extract, chocolate and/or cocoa," says Navrangpura resident Nisha B Shah.

Since her husband has had heart surgery, Ambawadi resident Mona Bhagat has been careful while preparing even the daily meals at home. Bhagat says, "My husband is fond of sweets. With festivities going on these days, I have to be extra careful. But one cannot totally avoid making sweets. So I am preparing khajur and anjeer rolls at home.

One does get them in the market, but then you cannot be sure of them being low-fat and low-sugar. Also, the quality is not that good. This is why I will be preparing sweets at home with dry fruits as the filling and low-fat homemade ghee."
