Ahmedabad erupted into celebration on Saturday morning when veteran Gandhian activist Anna Hazare ended his fast-unto-death campaign against corruption at Jantar Mantar in Delhi. Activists and denizens camping at Town Hall in support of Hazare, burst firecrackers, organised candlelight rally, distributed sweets and distance runners organized a victory run.

The mood was buoyant as citizens termed Hazare's win as 'second independence' after British rule and 'people's victory against the government'. Slogans like Anna Nahi Ye Andhi Hai, Ye Bharat Ka Dusra Gandhi Hai and Anna Tum Age Badho, Hum Tumhare Sath Hai kept the enthusiasm going.

"It is a great moment for every Indian. To celebrate the victory, we organized a candlelight rally from Income Tax circle to Town Hall where Mallika Sarabhai also joined us in the celebrations," said activist Bharatsinh Jhala. He said, some 1000 people participated in the rally.

Earlier, around 30 citizens, young and old, gathered at Keshav Baug at 6.30am and ran with placards bearing messages to wipe out corruption from the country. Originally, the run was planned to provide support but as the deadlock ended on Friday night with the government conceding to most of the demands put forward by Hazare, the supporters welcomed the move and carried out a victory run.

The run passed through Vijay Crossroads, Gujarat University ground and Shastri Nagar garden. The number of participants surged as the run progressed. The Laughing Club members at the garden showed keen interest and decided to continue with the campaign. "Corruption is the single biggest problem in India and it is high time we came out and tackled this menace. I am extremely proud that Anna has shown the way forward and I will do all I can to support the cause," said 65-year-old Krishnan Iyer, wiping sweat from his brow after completing the run.  For 52-year old Piyush Shah, running was his way of expressing support to Hazare. "Since I could not go to Jantar Mantar, I ran with fellow citizens to spread his message."
