Lodge complaints, DCP tells harassed borrowers

Deputy commissioner of police, Zone 1, Brijesh Jha said that the police were helpless as no police complaint has been filed by any of the victims who were taken to the torture room. "We are helpless as we cannot act against such anti-social elements who lend the money on high interests, as there are no police complaints," he told DNA while appealing to citizens through DNA to approach him if they have been harassed by the private money lenders. He assures them of prompt action.

Masters and their agents
According to sources there are around 500 main financiers in the city in the daily collection schemes, who employ around 4,500 agents across the city who prowl in almost all the slums and around markets in the city. These financers who have invested crores of rupees, have a turnover of around Rs200 crores every month. Sources also said that many police officials also fund these financiers and support them.

The clientele
These daily collection agents have thousands of clients both in eastern as well as in the western part of the city.  These clients constitute diamond workers, shop keepers, rickshaw drivers, traders etc, who have a daily flow of cash.

Ramani couldn't bear the torture
Shantilal Ramani, 48, a diamond worker who was heavily in debts after his wife suffered from kidney diseases and had to be kept on dialysis.  Ramani, a resident of Mukhtdham Appartments in Nikol village was forced by four of his debtors to transfer his property in their names. The four - Vivek Bhadoriya, Bijal Bharvad, Rajendrasingh and Rajbha -were named in Ramani's suicide note. All of them have prominent daily collection business in entire area. Ramani had taken around Rs5 lakh from different agents in a period of three years.
