After failing to sell his agricultural produce of last season, a loan-ridden farmer in Burdwan district committed suicide, police said today.

64-year-old Madhai Ghosh came home after drinking poison last evening after which he was taken to Burdwan Medical College and Hospital where he died hours later.

A resident of Raina's Jakta village, the farmer had grown paddy and potatoes on 9.5 bigha land last season, his family said adding he had failed to sell the crop.

A large part of the produce is still lying unsold in his godown while the moneylenders were pressurising him for the last few months, his family said.
