Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation to fine commercial, industrial units; but to wait for state’s nod for residential areas.
Litterbugs beware! The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) will heavily penalise anyone found improperly disposing garbage.
At AMC's meeting on Thursday, the standing committee passed a proposal for fines of up to Rs15,000 for not maintaining hygiene and sanitation in the city. The committee took almost two months to consider all the aspects before passing the proposal of heavy penalties on commercial and industrial units that do not dispose garbage properly.
However, it will wait for the state government's approval for penalties in residential areas.
AMC has taken a many initiatives to improve the solid waste management system and make the city cleaner. However, in some cases, its efforts have failed to yield desired results owing to lack of self-discipline amongst residents. This has prompted the AMC to penalise anyone found littering. Initially, AMC plans to levy a penalty of Rs50 on those who dump garbage outside their house or on the road.
However, the fine could go up to Rs2,500 if someone flouts the rule thrice in six months. AMC will levy penalties of Rs500 to Rs10,000 on hotel and restaurant owners for dumping waste outside their premises.
Similarly, developers will have to pay up to Rs10,000 in case mosquito are found breeding at their construction sites, while industrialists will have to pay a fine of Rs15,000 for the same.
AMC will instruct owners to clean their building and whitewash it. If the landlord does not pay heed to instructions, he will be fined up to Rs 1,000. City hospitals will have to pay up to Rs 5,000 for not maintaining proper hygiene. AMC will fine up to Rs5,000 for commercial units that have illegal water connections, while the penalty for having illegal drainage connections will be up to Rs2,500.
