The Surat commissioner of police, Shivanand Jha, on Saturday, suspended a police inspector following seizure of a large consignment of liquor from his jurisdiction. The suspension has sent shockwaves in the police department.

According to information, a large liquor consignment was seized from Vesu under Umra police station on the basis of specific tip-off by PCB officials late on Friday. The PCB police seized liquor bottles, a tempo, car and eight mobile phones worth Rs18.72 lakh and arrested five persons from the scene.

The arrested persons include three bootleggers of Surat, and two persons, who had brought the liquor consignment from Rajasthan, while Ritesh alias Shigo Singwala, a bootlegger residing at Palanpur Patia in Surat, was declared wanted.

Within hours of seizure of the liquor consignment, commissioner of police, Shivanand Jha issued orders suspending RG Desai, the police inspector of Umra, as the large consignment of liquor was seized from an area under his jurisdiction.

"Inspector RG Desai of Umra police station has been suspended with immediate
effect due to dereliction of duty," Jha said.
