The Maoists have established links with a burgeoning insurgent outfit raised in Sonitpur district of Assam, through the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA), police said today.

"This was revealed during the interrogation of Tarjan Majhi, the Sonitpur district commander of the fledging unit, Adivasi Peoples Army (APA)," they said.

Majhi was arrested with five others on Wednesday at Bhairabguri under Dhekiajuli police station near here.

Majhi claimed that an ULFA self-styled sergeant Major Das had provided arms training to APA cadre in Majbat area of Udalguri district and helped them contact the Maoists.

The APA district commander from Gossaigaon in Kokrajhar district claimed he had recruited a large number of APA members and procured some firearms.

Majhi said that the APA was raised in Sonitpur in 2001 and had cadre strength of 150 operating in Darrang and Udalguri districts.
