Levi Strauss donates Rs 20-lakh to rehabilitate flood victims

Casual apparel-maker, Levi Strauss India, today said it has donated $42,000 or (Rs20 lakh) for rehabilitation of victims affected by floods in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka.

The Levi Strauss Foundation has pledged $30,000 to Oxfam America, a humanitarian organisation working to provide relief to the flood victims, a press release said.

Besides, employees from Levi Strauss India have voluntarily donated upto a full day's salary to the Chief Minister's Relief Fund through the Bangalore Chamber of Industry and Commerce (BCCI), it added.

"We are all moved by the impact of this disaster on India and strongly feel the need to help. Our employees have been forthcoming and generous in their donation to this cause, and we want to acknowledge and support their efforts by matching their dollar contributions in aid of the victims of the flood and their families," Levi Strauss India, country manager, Shumone Chatterjee, said.

India witnessed its worst-ever floods on September 30 after heavy rains lashed the southern states of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. The deluge has displaced millions, caused loss of life and property to thousands and hampered business.

Oxfam will work with local partners to provide assistance to victims by implementing water, sanitation and hygiene-focused programmes to bring down health risks in the flodd affected areas.
