Korea proposes developing a model village project in India

South Korean Ambassador to India, Kim Joong Keun called on Union Minister for Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Vilasrao Deshmukh here today to propose the idea, which has elicited full support from the minister.

Korea is keen on developing a project in India on the lines of New Village Movement Initiative of South Korea that envisages developing a model village where residents choose their leader and independently decide how to develop it.
   
South Korean Ambassador to India, Kim Joong Keun called on Union Minister for Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Vilasrao Deshmukh here today to propose the idea, which has elicited full support from the minister, a government release said.
   
The basic material support and assistance is proposed to be provided by the Government of India and or the collaborating agencies.
   
Deshmukh assured support to the initiative and said it will further strengthen co-operation between the two countries.
   
Both India and South Korea are members of Afro-Asian Rural Development Organisation (AARDO), an inter-governmental agency which helps share the expertise in rural development among the member countries from Asia Pacific and African Region.
   
Korean Chambers of Commerce is reported to have expressed their willingness to assist financially in the pilot initiative under which one model village would be identified as a pilot project.
   
Based on its success the model can be replicated in a larger area. The whole process would be assisted and monitored in consultations with the different stakeholders.
   
Welcoming the idea, Deshmukh said the model village would be identified in consultation with the state government.
   
A nodal person would be identified by the ministry to design and implement the project in collaboration with partners and the South Korean counterparts.
   
The South Korean Ambassador also proposed that vocational training centres could be developed to hone peoples'skills in and around the identified village.
