Kolkata fire: 6 AMRI directors remanded in judicial custody till Jan 5

A city court Friday sent six directors of AMRI Hospital, where 93 people died after inhaling poisonous smoke from a fire, to judicial custody till January 5.

Chief Judicial Magistrate of Alipore court SM Shahnawaz sent RS Goenka, SK Todi, Prashant Goenka, Manish Goenka, Ravi Todi and Dayanand Agarwal to judicial custody till January 5, when they will be produced before the court again.

The prosecution prayed for judicial custody of the six directors who were in police custody since December 10.

The court extended the police custody of S Upadhyay and Sanjib Pal, two senior officials of AMRI Hospital till December 26 on a plea by the prosecution that they need to be interrogated further.

The state-run SSKM hospital authority, whom the court had directed to medically examine RS Agarwal, another director of the hospital who has claimed illness and at present admitted at the government facility, was directed to submit a report on his health on December 29.

The CJM, however, allowed the investigating officers to interrogate him at the hospital in the presence of doctors.

All the accused have been charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder and negligence.
