Her father is a school teacher in Surendranagar and Trupti Makwana was known for excellence in studies in her village in Limbdi.

On June 8,  Trupti slashed her wrists and attempted suicide.  The dean of BJ Medical College, where she was a student, Bharat Shah, claimed that Trupti was caught stealing stuff from the hostel suggesting that the embarrassment must have pushed her to take the extreme step.

However the people from Limbdi, who knew her since she was a child, refuse to believe that she is a kleptomaniac as suggested by the college authorities. A social worker from Limbdi Shardaben, who knows the Makwanas said, "I don't believe that a girl who was so good in studies and comes from a good family would get into the habit of compulsive thievery," "It seems the whole thing was fixed for some reason," she said.

Trupti is the youngest of four siblings -three sisters and a brother. Her eldest sister is a nurse. Trupti's father Natubhai, who is a school teacher and works as an LIC agent said, "The allegations of the institute that my daughter is kleptomaniac is baseless." He said his family is economically well off and there is no reason for Trupti to steal. "Morever, Trupti has been a very bright child," he said.

Trupti's family has lodged a police complaint against the girls in the hostel who allegedly beat her up and kept her locked for a night in the room. "They beat her badly and forced her to write a letter confessing to the theft," he said.
