Chief minister Narendra Modi, on Saturday, slammed the Centre for the 5% reduction in subsidy given to khadi. He also appealed to New Delhi to desist from reducing the subsidy for the sake of the poor, as khadi is a means of livelihood for them.

As part of Gandhi Jayanti celebrations, khadi shops in the city are offering special discounts for the month of October. Modi went to purchase khadi at such a shop in Ellisbridge area. Modi bought 3.25 metre of khadi for Rs342.60. Modi said it is the tradition of BJP to encourage people to purchase khadi to celebrate Gandhi Jayanti.

He attributed this tradition to the 40% rise in sale of khadi. Blaming the Congress for the cut in subsidy and commission for manufacturing of khadi, he said it is the main livelihood for many poor families.

"Unfortunately the Centre has reduced the subsidy by 5% on khadi. I appeal to the Union government not to cut the subsidy as khadi is a source of livelihood for the poor," Modi said. Modi came to the shop in Ellisbridge at around 11 in the morning. Modi looked at several khadi clothes and readymade garments before purchasing a shirt piece.
