Air services of cash-strapped Kingfisher airlines were badly hit on Sunday with almost half of its flights from major metros cancelled or delayed, causing hardship to passengers and prompting aviation regulator DGCA to contemplate action against the beleaguered carrier. Around 80 flights nation-wide including 16 from Mumbai, seven from Kolkata, four from Delhi and 13 from Bangalore were cancelled.  Similarly several incoming flights from Mumbai, Chennai, Goa, Delhi, Vishakapatnam, Coimbatore were also cancelled.

Several passengers who had gathered in front of the Kingfisher airline counter demanded from the airline staff why they were not informed of the cancellations in advance.

However, airline officials said that passengers were informed beforehand that flights to a few destinations would be cancelled for the next three days. Officials also said that few of them were accommodated in other airlines.

“Admittedly there have been flight disruptions since yesterday which will continue for four days due to unexpected events including bird strikes which rendered aircraft out of service. We therefore could only operate 208 daily flights,” said a statement issued by the airline late on Saturday night.
The cash strapped airline in the statement also refuted reports that the cancellation of flights was due to the IT department freezing its accounts.

Meanwhile aviation regulator DGCA has said that it is contemplating action against the airline for cancelling its flights without prior notice.
