With the Congress leadership seeking more time to take a decision on Telangana, the leaders of the party in the region are now finding themselves pressed to the corner.

One of the party’s senior leaders and a minister in Kiran Kumar Reddy’s cabinet, Komatireddy Venkat Reddy, has already tendered his resignation with the people of his constituency mounting pressure on him to quit the party and join the statehood movement.

According to sources, more Congress leaders from the Telangana region are now in a mood to quit the party primarily due to the pressure from the people of their constituencies.

Though in its nascent stage, the leaders are also said to be debating on an idea to float a new political outfit instead of joining an existing party, including the K Chandrasekhara Rao-led TRS.

“It is still early days. Though we have confidence on the leadership in terms of a favourable on Telangana, there is no indication of any time frame. We are not able to go to our villages. For instance, even for Dussera festival, many of us are worried about the way the people of our regions would react,” a senior Congress leader from Telangana said.

A final decision of the Telangana Congress leaders is expected to be out shortly though not many are inclined to join any other party for now.

Meanwhile, TRS chief K Chandrasekhara Rao has made an attempt to take the protest in Telangana to the national platform by staging a sit-on at Rajghat in Delhi. KCR has led a team of politicians, employees and other union leaders to Delhi with a primary objective of meeting the prime minister.

Though the team is yet to get an appointment from the prime minister’s office, it has tried to take advantage of the Gandhi Jayanti to stage a sit-on.

However, sources said, the team has also held a “secret meeting” with Telangana MPs and other senior leaders in Delhi to finalise a “common plan of action”.

Though the meeting that lasted for over an hour has not found any conclusive solution, the Telangana Congress leaders are said to have agreed to strengthen the ongoing general strike in Telangana.

The general strike called by the employees of various government and corporations has entered the 20th day and the government seems to be coming under pressure with the unions not willing to fall for any bait. In Singareni Collieries, the largest coal mine area in the region, the workers were offered two-day pay for one day work. However, there was cold response from the workers and none of the workers agreed to go out to mine coal.
