Expressing their solidarity with the UK student who was allegedly molested by a plumber at her apartment in Ahmedabad, all international students on internships in the city have rallied to join her fight for justice.

The UK student, Kaya Eldridge, said that after the incident at her home in Satellite, she was humiliated during the hearing on the complaint in the metropolitan court, where the lawyer for the defence reportedly asked her irrelevant questions to ridicule her. Eldridge has now taken up the issue of women being humiliated in the judiciary.

Around 10 interns from different parts of the world have issued an open letter to express their solidarity with Eldridge, who had struggled garner support from the Ahmedabad wing of AEISIC despite coming to the city under an AIESEC student exchange programme.

“We would like to strongly state that every woman regardless of her nationality, age, social position etc has the right to be treated with dignity and in every condition has the right to demand such treatment from state authorities and the judiciary,” the letter stated.

The letter further stated that the hearing into the molestation case had not been conducted in accordance with the Criminal Procedure Code and standards of human rights, as Eldridge had not been provided with an interpreter, a competent government lawyer, while the lawyer for the accused humiliated her during the cross-examination and also narrated jokes in the court to the amusement of those present in the court.

The letter also said that from the time Eldridge had taken a stand against her treatment in court, they had been receiving “letters of support from Gujarati women complaining about their obstructed access to the judicial system, which does not treat such crimes with sufficient seriousness, more particularly as the legal standards existing in India provide for the protection of victims of such sensitive crimes as sexual assault or rape.”
