Kashmir Valley generally peaceful, shutdown hits normal life

Barring a few stone-pelting incidents, Kashmir Valley remained peaceful today though normal life was affected due to a shutdown called by the hardline Hurriyat Conference led by Syed Ali Shah Geelani.

"The situation throughout Kashmir Valley continues to remain normal and under control," a police spokesman said. 

He said some persons, however, tried to disrupt peace when they pelted stones at police at Mochuwa in Bangh-e-Mehtab area here.

"They were chased away by police who used batons and the situation was brought under control," the spokesman said.

He said stones were also hurled at the office of the deputy commissioner in Shopian town in South Kashmir, 52-km from here.

Police used mild force to restore calm, the spokesman said.

Normal life was hit as Geelani had called for a shutdown as part of his protest calendar, officials said.

Shops and businesses in most parts of the Valley were closed. However, some private vehicles were seen plying on the roads.
