A day after a SPO (special police official) and a Territorial Army jawan was arrested in Poonch for killing a mentally challenged man in a fake encounter; two SPOs have deserted their camp along with weapons in Kulgam district of south Kashmir, prompting the security forces to sound an alert.

“Two SPOS Ghulam Mohi-ud-Din and Gul Mohammad alias Rahi have gone missing from district police lines Kulgam Monday night. Police has launched a manhunt to nab the missing SPOs”, said a police spokesman.

The duo was working as SPOs since 2006 with the police.  Police said both Mohi-ud-din and Rahi were surrendered militants working with Ikhwan, a counter insurgent group created by the forces in early nineties, to take on the militants. Later they were appointed as SPOs and were working with police.

“They have done a criminal act by decamping with weapons. We have alerted our men across to nab the two SPOs. We are on the job and hopefully we will get them soon”, said Mubasir Latiffi, Superintendent of Poilce,  Kulgam district.

SPOs are the casual employees of the J&K police who work on the consolidated monthly salary of Rs 3000. Most of the SPOs were erstwhile surrendered militants who were absorbed in the police department as part of their rehabilitation package.

Police is worried about the misuse of the weapons which they have taken along when they deserted the camp. “We are trying to find them as soon as possible”, said a top police source.

Around 23,783 Special Police Officials (SPOs) including 1375 ex-servicemen are working in the Jammu and Kashmir State. Jammu zone has the highest number of SPOs at 15,366 which include 1092 ex-service men. Kashmir Zone has the 8417 SPOs including 283 were ex-servicemen.

There is already pressure on Omar Abdullah government to disband the huge army of special police officials (SPOs) in Jammu and Kashmir in consonance with the Supreme Court judgment against Chhattisgarh government.

J&K Coalition of Civil Society (JKCCS), a human rights watchdog, has decided to knock at high court seeking the implementation of Supreme Court judgment in the state as well.

Meanwhile, a newly elected panch and a civilian have gone missing from Pulwama district. Locals alleged that the duo were abducted by the suspected ultras. Police has lodged an FIR and efforts are on to trace them out.
