The department of women and child welfare is again in the news for wrong reasons: one of its senior officials based in Tumkur has been accused of sexually exploiting the principal of a school for mentally challenged children.
Radhakrishna, deputy director, women and child welfare department, allegedly raped Kaveri (name changed), the principal of Spandana School for Special Children based in Batwade village in Tumkur. The victim has filed a complaint with Yelahanka police in this regard. She alleged that Radhakrishna sought sexual favours from her if she wanted government funds to be released for her school. She claimed that Radhakrishna exploited her this way for three years.
She said that on Friday too, the officer came to Bangalore with her, assuring her that she would be given funds for her school. In the city, the two stayed in a hotel in Yelahanka. The next day, Kaveri rushed to Yelahanka police station and filed a complaint of rape against Radhakrishna.
After registering the complaint, the police subjected Kaveri to medical examination. The police officials said the case seemed fishy as preliminary investigation indicated that the victim had consensual sex with the accused. The police said it was possible that something might have gone wrong between the two and Kaveri was pursuing the complaint to get even.
Nevertheless, the police officials added that the allegations against Radhakrishna were serious, as they involved outraging a woman’s modesty by abusing his official power. The deputy director was taken into custody for questioning.
