This should lighten up a powerless Bangalore. The state government on Tuesday decided to sign a three-year power purchase agreement for 1,000 mega watts (MW) of power with Power Trading Corporation India Limited (PTCIL), a leading provider of power trading solutions in the country.

“The agreement will benefit us as we will get it at an average tariff of Rs4.77 per unit. We will purchase 1,000MW throughout the year from 6am to 6pm. This is in addition to 500MW we are already getting from private producers,” chief minister BS Yeddyurappa said on Tuesday.

The additional power available through this pact is expected to significantly increase power supply to Bangalore. The currently reduced power generating capacity in the state has resulted in less than 31 million units of power available daily to Bangalore against a requirement of over 34 million units.

The Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (BESCOM) requires a minimum of 2,700 Mega Watts (MW) of power to meet the city’s demand.

But the present power supply is below 2,500 MW, which has forced the state government to resort to unscheduled power cuts for conservation.

Karnataka Power Corporation Limited (KPCL) managing director SN Jaamadar said the state-wide demand is for 120 million units of power, but the supply is just 112 million units daily. Yeddyurappa assured that the power supply position would improve substantially in the next few days as production from Raichur Thermal Power Station (RTPS) has gone up from 400MW to 870MW.

The Bellary Thermal Power Station has also resumed production. The state government was forced to opt for a long-term power purchase arrangement as the seven units of RTPS are witnessing frequent breakdowns due to poor maintenance of the plants.
