The state government on Wednesday said it was considering retired high court judge RA Mehta's name for the post.

The government also accused the Congress of scuttling appointment to the important post. State government spokespersons Jaynarayan Vyas and Saurabh Patel told reporters that the state government had been seeking Congress's co-operation for appointing a Lok Ayukta for over six years, but the opposition had created hurdles due to its 'negative approach'.
"The Congress hasn't been supportive in the appointment of Lok Ayukta as it wanted a person of its choice for the crucial post," they said.
The spokespersons alleged that leader of opposition in the state assembly Shaktisinh Gohil had been part of consultations with the CM for appointment of Lok Ayukta on several occasions in the past, but had stopped doing so in the last one year. "The state government wants to appoint a Lok Ayukta at the earliest, but the opposition leader's attitude is responsible for the delay," they alleged
They also rejected the charge that there was no provision for CM's role in the appointment of Lok Ayukta, saying that the CM, as the head of council of ministers, had a definite role in the key appointment. He said that the same procedure is followed in other states, too.
The spokespersons revealed that the name of retired HC judge RA Mehta was under consideration as Lok Ayukta. Interestingly, the government had earlier rejected Mehta's name after it was suggested by chief justice of Gujarat HC in June.
