A man was today arrested in connection with the murder of RTI activist Amit Jethwa, who was shot dead near the Gujarat high court last month, crime branch officials probing the case, said.

Sanjay Chauhan was arrested after he appeared before the investigating agency for questioning following summons issued to him, they said.

According to crime branch officials, Chauhan, a native of Junagadh district, was part of the conspiracy to kill Jethwa. He had brought two contract killers to Ahmedabad and helped them identify Jethwa.

Chauhan had also helped the assailants track movements of Jethwa before the RTI activist was shot dead on the night of July 20, they claimed.

The Crime Branch is also probing the role of BJP MP from Junagadh Dinu Solanki's nephew, Pratap alias Shiva, in the case.

Whereabouts of Pratap could not be traced, police officials said, adding that they were investigating his role through other sources.

A day after Jethwa was shot dead, his father Bhikabhai Jethwa had alleged BJP MP Dinu Solanki's role in his son's murder.

Two persons including a police constable from Junagadh have been arrested for the murder of Jethwa, who had a few days before his death filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) against illegal mining in Gir forest region.

On Monday last, the city crime branch had arrested a police constable Bahadursinh Dhirubha Wadher, 37, posted in Girgadhada police station in Junagadh district.

A couple of days later, they arrested Pachan Shiva, 28, who was allegedly one of the two motorcycle-borne assailants who had shot Jethwa.

According to police, Wadher had given the contract of killing Jethwa to Shiva and one Shailesh Pandya, a sharp shooter, who is still absconding.

Both Shiva and Pandya had come on a motorcycle and shot Jethwa from close range when he was coming out of his lawyer's office near the Gujarat High Court on July 20.

The police said that the duo were promised Rs11 lakh by Wadher for killing Jethwa.

After the arrest of Wadher, crime branch officials had said that there were no leads which pointed at Dinu Solanki's involvement in Jethwa's murder.

The PIL filed by Jethwa in the Gujarat high court also has Dinu Solanki and Pratap Solanki as respondents. In the petition he has alleged that the uncle-nephew duo were involved in illegal mining in Gir forest region.
