A JD(U) candidate who is seeking a second term from Narkatia Assembly constituency in Bihar was arrested with Rs8.10 lakh in cash from a hotel in this headquarter town of East Champaran district.

Superintendent of police Paras Nath said MLA Shyam Bihari Prasad of JD(U) was taken into custody from a hotel late last night for possessing a suitcase with Rs8.10 lakh in cash in violation of the model code of conduct for elections.

Since the offence was bailable under provisions of the Representation of the People Act, he was later released on furnishing a bail bond from the Town police station where he was brought from the hotel.

"The money has been confiscated," Nath said.
