Joining issue with AIADMK supremo Jayalalithaa over the probe ordered into reported unauthorised construction of a tea factory by her, Tamil Nadu chief minister M Karunanidhi today alleged she had hidden several facts and attempted to 'hoodwink' the people through her explanation on the issue.

In a statement here, he said the Kodanadu Village Panchayat President had cancelled his permission to construct buildings at the tea estate as its management had not submitted the no-objection certificates from several government departments for the construction.

The estate management had not received the letter by the panchayat president in this regard.

Reacting to government's decision ordering a probe by an IAS officer into the alleged unauthorised construction of the factory in Kodanadu in Nilgiris district, Jayalalithaa had yesterday described it as "mischievous" and "politically motivated" saying it would "fail" like other cases against her.

She also said only renovation of a 122-year-old dilapidated factory had been undertaken with the permission of officials as the condition of the factory posed a danger to the lives of the workers.

Karunanidhi said the estate management had applied for permission for construction of four buildings in the estate separately but started construction to bring all the four as a single building, which was against the rules. Moreover the village panchayat President had no power to sanction permission for such constructions.

Jayalalithaa had hidden all these facts and was oppossing the probe as it would bring out all these, he charged.

The state government had on June 29 ordered Rural Development director D Udhayachandran to conduct a detailed investigation into the issue.
