Soon after facing ire from Congress corporators over the issue of increase in jaundice cases in the city, health officials of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) have swung into action.

To stop jaundice from spreading through unhealthy food and water served to customers, food inspectors raided several restaurants in the Thakkarnagar area of the north zone.

The officials initiated a surprise inspection operation of several popular and crowded restaurants. During the raids, the officials were shocked to see stale food being served in many restaurants of the area.

In no mood to spare the hotel owners who are responsible for spreading the disease, AMC sealed three restaurants in the north zone. These restaurants are Laxmi Restaurant in the Thakkarganar village, Bhairavnath Restaurant on the approach road and Gurukul Milk Palace in Ratanbaug area.

“The condition in which these restaurants are running was pathetic. Any one who eats at such places will fall ill,” said Dr Chirag Shah, Deputy Health Officer of the north zone.

At these restaurants, officials found 300 kgs of stale food including vegetables and pulses. They also found 300 litres of unhealthy cold drinks from the restaurants.

“These restaurants are popular because of their low-cost food. However, they are compromising heavily on quality and hygiene for that,” said an AMC squad member who conducted the raids.

Apart from the restaurants, the officials also raided roadside water pouch vendors and seized 1,000 pouches from them. These pouches have no manufacturing or expiry dates on them.

“People must check for the dates before consuming them. These water pouches can easily spread jaundice,” said Dr Shah.

He also ordered a complete ban on sugar cane juice stalls in that area. “We have seized three juice machines from the vendors who have refused to follow our instructions,” informed Dr Shah.

Apart form the north zone, health officials also conducted similar raids across the city. Striking on the ever dirty food stalls near the Geeta Mandir bus stop, officials served notices to more than 50 vendors.

“They must know that they are responsible for spreading disease,” said Dr. Bhavin Joshi, DyHO of central zone.
