Jats in Haryana today suspended their pro-quota stir, which disrupted rail traffic in Northern India for three weeks, after being assured of the formation of a commission to look into their demands but members of the community continued the agitation in Uttar Pradesh resorting to firing and arson.

The agitation was suspended after talks with Haryana chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, who had agreed to set up a Backward Classes Commission within a month to consider the demand for reservation, All India Jat Aarakshan Sangarsh Samiti general secretary Satpal Choudhry and its state President Hawa Singh Sangwan announced at Mayyar village about 15km from Hisar.

However, Jats in UP went on the rampage blocking roads, indulging in brick batting, opening fire, torching vehicles and holding government officials captive at separate places in Gautam Buddha Nagar district prompting the police to resort to lathi-charge and arrest 12 protestors, officials in Lucknow said.

Around 250 members of Jat community led by one Manveer Tewatiya blocked road in Mirzapur village under Rabupur police station in GB Nagar district this afternoon, they said.

When additional superintendent of police Rakesh Jolly and additional district magistrate OP Arya reached the spot and asked the protestors to lift the blockade, they allegedly indulged in brick batting and opened fire, sources said.

In retaliatory action, police resorted to lathi-charge, fired tear gas shells and arrested 12 persons from the spot, they said.

Meanwhile, in Nilauni Shahpur village adjacent to Mirzapur officials and members of divisional task force led by executive engineer Krishna Kumar were held captive by the trouble-makers.

The agitators also torched four vehicles including a truck and three jeeps, sources said.

While all the members of the task force were rescued by police, deputy director of welfare department AK Verma could not be traced, they said.

Before the stir was suspended in Haryana a meeting was held in Mayyar village attended by their leaders including president of All India Jat Aarakshan samiti Yashpal Malik, its general secretary Satpal Choudhary, state president Hawa Singh Sangwan and president of its Punjab unit Karnail Singh to discuss the outcome of the meeting with the chief minister.

After the meeting the Samiti leaders addressed the protestors informing them that Hooda had agreed to set up a Haryana Backward Classes Commission within a month to consider the demand of communities like Roar, Jat, Jat Sikh, Tagi, Bishnoi and others desiring to come under the ambit of the Backward Classes.

The meeting which was attended by thousands of Jats from all over the state ended with a resolution to suspend its agitation.
