Rules have been framed under which doctors shall now prescribe medicines on salt basis and not on the trade name of a drug manufacturing company.
Jammu and Kashmir will soon have a comprehensive drug policy to check sale and stocking of spurious drugs, minister for health Sham Lal Sharma said today.
The state has no drug policy at present. The formulation of such a policy is nearing completion, he told the legislative council on a calling attention notice by MY Taing (NC) and Bashir Ahmad Magrey (Congress).
Sharing the concern of members on drug abuse and sale of spurious medicines, Sharma said the Drug Controller Organisation has been reactivated by appointing 78 inspectors, who have been deputed in various health blocks in the state for intensive market checking.
The minister said the existing drug testing laboratories are also being modernised.

Sharma said the state has an effective mechanism to deal with drug trade in the state by virtue of strengthening of State Drug Controller with intelligence and legal cells and proper surveillance system.
The centre has also laid guidelines for efficient communication networking with respect to inter-state movement of spurious drugs, he said.
The minister said the state Drugs and Food Control Organisation has launched a helpline alongwith a website of the department for projecting day-to-day activities and to redress the grievances of the public.
The minister said that the centre has now put in place the drugs and cosmetics amendment Bill, 2008, wherein for sale and manufacture of spurious drugs, the terms of imprisonment and fine have been enhanced variably and offences have been made cognizable and non-bailable under recommendation for designated courts for trial of offences under the Act.
