To perpetuate the memory of martyrs of the Jalianwala Bagh massacre 91 years ago, the government has launched a light-and-sound show in the historical park here.

The show's inaugural run took place at Jalianwala Bagh, which is a tourist attraction for the historical value it has with India's freedom struggle, last evening in the presence of defence minister A K Antony and Information and broadcasting minister Ambika Soni.

At least 379 people had lost their lives and thousands injured when British troops on the orders of Brigadier General Reginald Dyer opened fire on unarmed demonstrators in Jalianwala Bagh here on April 13, 1919, considered to be one of the dark chapters of British rule in India.

Earlier, paying rich tributes to the martyrs at a function at Jalianawala Bagh, a visibly moved Antony said he was proud as an Indian to be standing at the same place where over 20,000 people had gathered, defying the draconian dictates of the British forces.

"It is a holy place for entire India" as many freedom fighters had lost their lives for the cause of liberty, he said, describing the massacre at the park as "a turning point" in the freedom struggle.

Antony appealed to the countrymen to rededicate themselves to achieve the unfulfilled aspirations of our forefathers - that of a strong, united and developed India.

Soni, during her address, said the UPA government had announced a grant of Rs 100 crore to the state government for
preservation of the monuments and buildings.

She also assured that the demand of telecast of a programme regarding the life and contributions of the martyrs on national television and radio would be considered.
