BJP today reacted strongly to environment minister Jairam Ramesh's charge that the opposition parties were politicising the issue of clearance to Jaitapur nuclear power plant and cautioned him that he should not create "another Nandigram" at the site.

"While we appreciate the passion of Jairam Ramesh on environment issues, it has to be put right on record that if he claims to be right, that does not mean all others are wrong," BJP spokesperson Rajiv Pratap Rudy said.

He maintained that the opposition appreciates the need for development and power but this does not give the minister the liberty to reject the views of the opposition and the people at large.

"I am sure that Jairam Ramesh is not looking forward to another Nandigram simply out of his brazen hatred for the opposition and people's issues," Rudy said.

Ramesh has given conditional clearance to the project but admitted there are some problems associated with land acquisition and local communities have to be taken along. BJP has criticised Ramesh for giving his nod.

"BJP demands that all issues, be they ecological, of livelihood or access of fishermen to the coast, should be addressed in toto and it is advisable that there is no knee-jerk reaction from the government," Rudy said.

The Rajya Sabha MP took potshots at the government also on recent corruption cases, saying BJP is aware that the Prime Minister, the union ministers in the government and the leaders of Congress are on the "backfoot" for obvious reasons.
