Parliamentary democracy was shamed on Monday when speaker of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative assembly Mohammad Akbar Lone lost his cool after heated arguments and hurled abuses and invectives at the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) MLA Molvi Iftikhar Hussain Ansari who in turn tossed a table fan at him but it missed the intended target.

The incident occurred when the House resumed its business on Monday morning. PDP leader Mehbooba Mufti urged the speaker to suspend the question hour as they had given the adjournment motion after the alleged custodial death of activist National Conference Syed Mohommad Yousuf.

However, the speaker said he would take a call on the motion after the question hour. Disagreeing, PDP MLAs stood up on their seats. Amidst din, there was a heated exchange of words between Ansari and the speaker. Lone lost cool and hurled invectives and abusive language at Ansari.  The PDP MLA too shouted back.  Things came to a pass when Ansari uprooted the table fan and lobbed at the speaker’s pulpit. However, the marshals and fellow PDP MLA Javid Mustafa held Ansari back and thus the fan did not hit the speaker’s podium.

Speaker claimed that he was provoked by Ansari who used abuses and leveled baseless allegations against him. He also ordered expunging the whole saga of abuses and exchange of words from the records. He also appealed the media not to report about it. Lone later regretted the incident saying he has high regards for the PDP MLA who is an influential Shia cleric. “If I have hurt the sentiments of Ansari I regret for the same.  He is my teacher who brought me into politics. I have offered prayers behind him”, he said.

Ansari, on the other hand, said, “I have nothing to say he is like this. Rather then acting as presiding officer, he becomes the party and uses abuses. When he pointed figure at my faith I reacted and hurled fan and Allah saved him”, he said

PDP president Mehbooba Mufti was very critical of the speaker saying his actions are the “reflection of the culture” of the National Conference.
