J&K govt to provide relief package to floods affected people

The Jammu and Kashmir government today decided to provide a relief package for those affected by flash floods in Kargil district to enable them to construct and repair their houses.

Rs2 lakh will be given to those whose houses were totally damaged, while those whose houses were partially damaged will receive Rs1 lakh, minister for consumer affairs and public distribution and transport Qamar Ali Akhoon said at the end of his five day extensive tour of the flood affected district.

He said it was decided that 20 tin sheets would be provided for totally damaged houses and 10 sheets for partially damaged ones.

Akhnoon said locals would be engaged for reconstruction of infrastructure for which they should be given wages of Rs110 per day. It was also decided that Rural Development department would re-construct community hall and private school at Hignus.

The minister visited the Shakar Chiktan, Shargole, Silmo-Btalik blocks and Kargil town where the properties and crops have been badly damaged due to flash floods. He gave instruction to the officers for early reconstruction of damaged infrastructure in the flood-hit areas.

He said property worth Rs80 crore have been damaged during the flash floods in the district.

The minister also asked the officers to maintain accountability and transparency in the works to ensure that all quality parameters are observed during execution of work.
