The Jammu and Kashmir unit of the BJP today accused the state government of meting out a step motherly treatment towards the Jammu division.

"The government's decision yesterday to appoint an Inquiry Commission to look into the recent disturbances in the Kashmir valley, which left 17 people dead, and giving compensation to the next of the kin of the victims is just a ploy to please the agitating masses with a view to regain the lost control by it.

But this decision also points towards double standards adopted by the government for Jammu as no probe was ordered into the 2008 killing incident in Jammu, which left 12 people dead in police firing during land row agitation," BJP MLAs Ashok Khajuria, Jugal Kishore Sharma and Sukhnandan Choudhary told a joint press conference in Jammu.

The government did not even announce any substantial compensation for the Jammu firing victims' families, they said.

Referring to the incident of the disappearance of two minor girls while in policy custody in Kishtwar district in Jammu, the MLAs said that the government did not constitute any inquiry against the erring police officials despite an agitation by the locals of the area, however, in a similar situation in the Shopian area of Kashmir, several inquiries were conducted and serious action had been taken against the officials concerned.

The BJP MLAs also accused the ministers hailing from Jammu in the ruling NC-Congress coalition of not doing anything for the region so as "to remain in power".

"This double standard adopted by the government towards the people of Jammu is highly condemnable and BJP warns the government to shun this discriminatory policy in the interests of the state," they said.
