Of 836 crimes reported from Delhi markets and localities covered by CCTVs since 2009, only 22 cases were solved with the help of the footage.
Some of the markets and localities in the capital may be covered by CCTVs but it appears that the footage from these cameras are of little help in cracking cases if one goes by official statistics.
A total of 836 crimes were reported from markets and localities covered by CCTVs since 2009 but only a dismal 22 cases were solved with the help of the footage provided by them.
According to Delhi Police figures, 67 incidents of crime took place in around 20 markets and other areas covered by CCTVs this year alone but only two cases could be solved with the help of the footage provided by these cameras.
Last year, 17 crimes were solved with the help of CCTV footages but the total number of cases reported from the areas covered under closed circuit cameras were a whopping 442.
In 2010, 250 cases were reported from these areas but only three could be solved using the CCTV footage while in 2009, not a single case out of 77 reported in these areas could be solved using these cameras.
According to the government plan, 60 markets in the capital and 27 border points are to be covered under CCTV surveillance system and by now, installation of this system has been completed in 27 sites.
Initial plan was to cover 59 markets and 27 border points and later one more location Jama Masjid was added to it, a senior police official said. Two locations were taken up as pilot project.
In the first phase, 25 markets and four border points were identified for installation of CCTVs and installation at 27 sites have been completed, he said.
In Phase-II (A), 28 markets and ten border check posts and Phase-II (B), six locations of Central and New Delhi districts have been taken up. CCTV systems were also got installed by Delhi Police in various markets, he said.
Following the terror attack in Delhi High Court last September, CCTV cameras were also being installed in Supreme Court, High Court, and six district courts.
Another 36 CCTVs were installed at nine locations by Traffic Police. However, these cameras are not in working condition due to dispute in annual maintenance contract with the company which has supplied it.
