In the wake of a fresh controversy over reports that powers of the Election Commission may be curtailed, Congress on Wednesday suggested that the issue of statutory backing to the Model Code of Conduct should be allowed to rest.
"I had suggested that perhaps this is the idea which should be looked into. Obviously, the EC has a different view point and the idea is not flying."
"The GOM has very clearly and categorically said that we are not looking at the issue. So allow things to abate," party spokesperson Manish Tewari told reporters.
A battery of ministers, who are in the GoM on corruption--Pranab Mukherjee, Kapil Sibal and Salman Khurshid, besides the Department of Personnel -- vehemently denied yesterday that there was any proposal to rein in EC by giving statutory backing to the Code.
