Ishrat Jahan case: SIT chief says he is yet to give his consent

Satyapal Singh is currently posted in Mumbai and has said that even the Maharashtra government has not approached him in this connection.

Satyapal Singh, a 1980-batch IPS officer posted as Additional director general of police (ADGP) and currently holding three important departments in Maharashtra government, has officially not given his consent to be the chairman of Ishrat-SIT.

Singh is currently posted in Mumbai and has said that even the Maharashtra government has not approached him in this connection.

Talking to DNA on phone from Mumbai, Singh said that he has so far not given his consent to become the chairman of Ishrat-SIT. "I have not been approached for this," he told DNA.

Singh further said that he is merely a government official and is bound by laws of the state. "The Maharashtra government will decide this," he said.

He also holds the charge of law and order and special operation. He was transferred as the ADGP, establishment from the post of police commissioner, Pune.

Singh had held the post of commissioner of police in Pune and Nagpur and was also special IGP, Konkan range handling Naxal-related issues. He has also worked in framing the outlines for setting up of the coastal police stations in Maharashtra.

Singh is known as a no non-sense officer who has stayed away from controversies.

He came down heavily on the underworld in Mumbai city when he was the joint commissioner of police, Mumbai Crime Branch. He received president's medal for meritorious services in 2004. He was also in the CBI for a short period. His first posting was as DSP in Buldhana.

Born in Basauli in Meerut district of Uttar Pradesh, he completed his early studies in his village before post-graduating in M.Sc (Chemistry) from Meerut University. He did his M.Phil from Delhi University and completed his PhD in public administration. He went to Australia to do his MBA.
