If you are fond of pure ghee and cannot do without it, then think twice before you make your latest purchase.

In a recent raid, the Vejalpur police arrested one person for allegedly selling beef tallow that was being used to manufacture ghee. The police busted a slaughterhouse and seized around 6000 kgs of beef tallow that was ready to be sold to the fake ghee producers.

The cops arrested Abdul Gaffar Qureshi from Juhapura and seized animal fats and utensils used in the slaughter of cows to get the tallow. Based on the information provided by Qureshi, the police raided various places in Danilimda and Shahpur and seized more cartons of animal fats.

Qureshi had sold around 1,250 kgs of tallow before being raided and he had loads of beef tallow that he had planned to sell to retailers in the city. However, the police are yet to arrest Iqbal Khwaja from Danilimda, Tahir Sattar and Nazmul Hussain from Shahpur who are suspects in the scam.

Assistant commissioner of police, 'A' division, VR Tolia told reporters that investigation pertaining to the buyers and ultimate user of the animal fats is on and the police will get to the bottom of the scam soon. However, the police have not ruled out the possibility of the animal fats being already used to manufacture bogus ghee.

The raid was conducted by the police inspector, Vejalpu police station, JM Bharwad. "We effected the raid on the basis of a control message and found many suspicious things on the spot," he said.

Primary police investigation had revealed that the cow tallow was sold at Rs30/kg to the persons who manufacture several products out of it.  In three separate raids, the police have seized 176 tins of 15 kg each and 15 barrels of 200 kg of animal fats each. They are in the process of interrogating other people involved in the crime. "There are around eight to ten people who may be arrested soon," Tolia said.

During the raids the police also seized two oxen, one cow and one calf from Qureshi's residence and declared his father, Abdul Toli, an absconder.
